The MP3 store is live!

As many of you may have heard, Rhapsody is now selling DRM-free 256kbps MP3s. And coupled with this release, is a release of a new flash-based web player. I personally worked on both of these projects, and I'm excited to see what everyone else thinks.

Rhapsody on NetVibes

I'm a big Netvibes fan. I think they do a fantastic job at the whole RSS/desktop/reader/ajaxy thingy. That's not to say I don't like the other alternatives, but Netvibes grabbed me away from google/ig early on and I've never looked back.

How to get your band on Rhapsody

I, once being in a band myself, was looking for guidance on how to get my band's music onto major music services like Rhapsody, iTunes, Napster, etc. The first step is very easy, simply submit your CD or Album to CD Baby.

The Test of a First Rate Web Service

A long time ago I came to the conclusion that the test of a first-rate application was the ability of the consumer to use 95% of the application without ever resorting to any documentation. Everything should be patently obvious and available at the right place and the right time. A few years in, I also came to understand that great applications were often used in ways that were completely unanticipated by the development teams that designed the application and created the features. Breaking the rules and moving beyond the documentation was a surprising common usage pattern. Sure, new uses for application features were partly due to the sheer combinatorial possibilities of mixing features to enable new effects. And then, of course, on occasion there were those pathfinder customers that hit some artificial ceiling and simply broke the rules of the product and struck out for new territory, turning features and product design on edge.

Rhapsody Web Services & Yahoo Pipes

I'm sure some of you are familiar with Yahoo Pipes. You may have already created your very own Rhapsody pipe. I on-the-other-hand have not done much with Pipes and the recent news that it was their first year anniversary reminded me I’ve been remiss. So, in this post I will talk about a Rhapsody Pipe that I recently put together. If its been a while since you played around with Rhapsody Web Services this may be a great time to reengage via Yahoo Pipes.

Bungee Announced

A few days ago Bungee Labs officially opened their Platform As A Service (PAAS), called Bungee Connect, to all developers as a public beta. Here's the link: www.bungeelabs.com.

We've had the pleasure of working with the Bungee Labs folks to test drive our own Rhapsody Web Services, and we have been universally impressed with their offering. While much has been written about their launch, I thought I'd take a few moments to highlight some of the good press they've received, and discuss how I feel the Bungee "cloud" analogy relates to the Rhapsody "cloud" analogy.

RWS Review: TVShowMusic

Now that Ben Rotholtz has kicked off the new blog for us, I wanted to explain a little bit about what you are going to see from this blog in the coming months. A group of us here at Rhapsody will be rotating through highlights and different aspects of our web services. Some may be announcements, some reviews of web services customers, some contemplations on new technologies, and some just random thoughts.

A Blog Worth Watching

There’s a lot freedom to choose the music you listen to: What you listen to, where you listen to it, how often you listen. Listening takes a lot of time and it’s no wonder we sometimes (or often) fall into the rut of the same-old-same-old. There’s no reliable method for speed reading through music and even then you would have to question the goal. “She who listens to the most music wins.” Hmmm.

New RealPlayer is Now Available

The new RealPlayer for Windows is now available in beta. You can download it at http://www.realplayer.com. The Mac version will follow by the end of the year. We are also working on a Linux version but have not yet announced a delivery date. It would be great to get your feedback about the new RealPlayer and what we can do to improve the product experience.

Bungee Labs Lifts Off with Rhapsody SOAP

This week at Web 2.0 Bungee Labs took the wraps off of Bungee Connect, a radically new development environment that will accelerate the creation of a new generation of cool web-based applications that support SOAP, JSON and REST APIs. Bungee Connect is an incredibly exciting development environment and we can easily imagine it becoming a standard to build new music applications using Rhapsody’s extensive SOAP and REST APIs. At Web 2.0 Bungee demonstrated a Rhapsody enabled application that played music.

The Future is Shipping Now

When Nokia and Real announced that Rhapsody would be made available for the new Nokia N800 Internet tablet at CES in early January there was only a very rough implementation and an aspirational glimmer of what could be accomplished by tapping into the Rhapsody DNA Direct SOAP APIs for metadata, search, library, account management and playback. We remember telling a number of you that the Rhapsody DNA Direct APIs were really easy to use but nothing helps underscore the claim like robust shipping product.
