On December 4th, 2008, the content team will be changing some points in the genre tree structure, specifically surrounding the Alternative and Punk Genres.

As many of you may have heard, Rhapsody is now selling DRM-free 256kbps MP3s. And coupled with this release, is a release of a new flash-based web player. I personally worked on both of these projects, and I'm excited to see what everyone else thinks.

I'm a big Netvibes fan. I think they do a fantastic job at the whole RSS/desktop/reader/ajaxy thingy. That's not to say I don't like the other alternatives, but Netvibes grabbed me away from google/ig early on and I've never looked back.

A long time ago I came to the conclusion that the test of a first-rate application was the ability of the consumer to use 95% of the application without ever resorting to any documentation. Everything should be patently obvious and available at the right place and the right time. A few years in, I also came to understand that great applications were often used in ways that were completely unanticipated by the development teams that designed the application and created the features. Breaking the rules and moving beyond the documentation was a surprising common usage pattern. Sure, new uses for application features were partly due to the sheer combinatorial possibilities of mixing features to enable new effects. And then, of course, on occasion there were those pathfinder customers that hit some artificial ceiling and simply broke the rules of the product and struck out for new territory, turning features and product design on edge.

A few days ago Bungee Labs officially opened their Platform As A Service (PAAS), called Bungee Connect, to all developers as a public beta. Here's the link: www.bungeelabs.com.

We've had the pleasure of working with the Bungee Labs folks to test drive our own Rhapsody Web Services, and we have been universally impressed with their offering. While much has been written about their launch, I thought I'd take a few moments to highlight some of the good press they've received, and discuss how I feel the Bungee "cloud" analogy relates to the Rhapsody "cloud" analogy.

Now that Ben Rotholtz has kicked off the new blog for us, I wanted to explain a little bit about what you are going to see from this blog in the coming months. A group of us here at Rhapsody will be rotating through highlights and different aspects of our web services. Some may be announcements, some reviews of web services customers, some contemplations on new technologies, and some just random thoughts.

2007 was a great year for development efforts that used Rhapsody Web Services. We saw a number of implementations that infused Rhapsody artist, metadata and playback assets in a highly integrated manner.
